Description Details Extra Info

This uniquely bitter-sweet traditional Eastern European delicacy is loved by many. We make our poppy filling from fresh-ground, premium seeds.  In order to retain the most flavor (and nutrients), we do not boil or soak the poppy seeds prior to grinding.  This requires a special grinder, but it is worth it!

These days it seems most people consider "bitter" to be bad, so many poppy seed recipes are very sweet - to the point of diminishing the poppy flavor and obscuring its characteristic bitterness.  Common bitters that most people appreciate are in coffee, dark chocolate, and even many micro-brewed beers.  If you appreciate these foods, there is a good chance you'll like a poppy seed roll!  With all this emphasis on the bitter, you might begin to think that there isn't any sweetnes at all - but you'd be wrong.  We use pure cane sugar (not beet sugar or any version of corn syrup) to carefully balance the bitter-sweet combination.  You'll have ample opportunity to taste the poppy seed since each and every roll is made with more filling than dough!

Speaking of dough, just as you'd expect we have to wake up early to start making it.  All of our dough is made with a special-milled unbleached, unbromated flour.  We use fresh, liquid milk (not powder!) and local eggs (not canned, cartoned, or frozen ones).  We also use Trans-fat free, non-hydrogenated shortening and butter blend margarine.  Here again we use only pure cane sugar.  Of course, our suppliers for these items are all family-owned businesses.

From start to finish, there are no less than 18 different hands-on steps (depending how you count, you could say as many as 26!) to get a baked roll out our door to you.  You know what they say: nothing good comes easy!

poppy seed roll February 4, 2012
Reviewer: Donald Pixler from Kapaa, HI United States
I want to say that I was excited when I saw your product on line.  I believe my expectations were reasonable for a baked product.  My culinary background is extensive, so my opinion and critique should be considered educated and informed.  My own evaluation was that the dough was dry, tasteless, and contributed nothing to the product beyond being an envelope for the filling.  The filling was equally uninspired, dry and despite the favorable ratio of poppyseed to dough, it did not make for a successful pastry.  My wife took one roll to a meeting with her friends, and the role was less than 25% eaten after partial tastes were not fully eaten.  I took another roll to my office of 12 people.......I returned with 65% of the product, and did not receive one favorable comment.  Essentially, the product failed in three different taste environments.  I threw away over 60 percent of the 3 rolls.

Old world taste January 22, 2012
Reviewer: Joe Grusetski from Kennewick, WA United States
Haven't had a poppyseed roll as good since my mother made them about 25 years ago.  My comment is that they are not sickeningly sweet as so many others that are just pieces of pastry.  Yours are hearty and bread-based. My two year old grandson loves the poppyseed "cakes"  and that about sums it up.

Poppyseed January 17, 2012
Reviewer: Tracey Kersey from Little Rock, AR United States
I ordered this as a gift. I was told that the poppy seed rolls were a little disappointing in comparison to our Aunt Emilys' from Nanickoke, PA. She is no longer with us. I believe the words used were dry and crunchy. I wish I could try one for myself as I love poppyseed rolls.

Almost as good as Aunt Annie's!!!!! January 14, 2012
Reviewer: Mary Ann Schetlick from Berkeley Heights, NJ United States
Yours is the first poppy seed cake I've eaten in many years that very closely compares to my aunt's homemade one (her recipe was one passed down through the generations and was originally from Slovakia).  The poppy seed filling is plentiful and of good quality, however, my aunt's was a bit "creamier".  Also, her cake was a bit more moist.  Overall yours is very good and I would order again.
